Can alimony help spouses through the difficulties of divorce?

Divorce is one of the most stressful events in a person's life if it happens, and there is little protection from the stress even when most points between spouses are uncontested in court. But one of the most stressful parts of the process is navigating unknown territory because no one gets married ever expecting to deal with a divorce.

How much does a divorce cost?

It is difficult to say because more complicated and lengthier processes are often costlier. Florida divorces cost at least the filing fees and summons fees, which usually cost just under $500. This is, however, not including any costs for negotiating or mediating post-separation needs such as potential alimony payments.

What is the most common dispute in divorces?

An issue that often requires litigation between spouses involves property, either a primary residence or other possessions the married couple acquired. One spouse may be able to keep a house but since paying half of a house's value to a departing spouse is very expensive, many people are forced to sell it.

How can people separate their finances?

Financial support often takes the form of alimony payments if one spouse is financially reliant on the other. The purpose of alimony is to allow a spouse time to get his or her life together with the requisite skills and employment. The arrangement may last for several months or years, dependent on a judge's decision.

Do I need a lawyer?

It is always recommended for spouses to maintain legal representation to protect their interests. This is true even if spouses do not disagree on any major points.
