Notes From Attorney Alan Rubinstein

When you come to a place where you feel you need to end your marriage, the question is, how will you choose to end it? Will you end it with compassion and civility, or will you end it with anger and bickering?

There are two quotes that I like to show my clients from time to time. Neither deals with divorce cases, but they let our clients see the different ways that divorces can be handled. The quote, which is positive and that we try to use as our mission, is written by Mohandas Gandhi in "The Story of My Experiments With the Truth." The other quote, which is negative, is from "Bleak House" by Charles Dickens and was written in 1853.

"My Joy was Boundless. I had learned the true practice of law. I had learned to find out the better side of human nature and to enter men's hearts. I realized that the true function of a lawyer was to unite parties riven asunder. The lesson was so indelibly burnt into me that a large part of my time during the 20 years of my practice as a lawyer was occupied in bringing about private compromises of hundreds of cases. I lost nothing terribly — not even money, certainly not my soul."

- Gandhi, "The Story of My Experiments With the Truth"

"Becoming involved in a lawsuit is like 'being ground to bits in a slow mill; it's being roasted at a slow fire; it's being stung to death by single bees; it's being drown by drops; it's going mad by grains.' Hundreds of thousands of people are exposed to such torture each year, some of them actually choosing to initiate the process. They invariably find the experience painful, protracted, and expensive. When it has run its course, they often realize that it was futile. Yet there remains a queue of victims impatient for their turn."

Charles Dickens, "Bleak House," 1853

When you retain our services, you will be able to have whatever representation you desire, but I hope you will choose Gandhi's concept rather than Dickens's concept.
